We were delighted to hear about this initiative through Judi Lane from Croydon who was part of our Gather National Summit 2019. We asked her to share about how the prayer booklet came about:
In 2011 one of our convenors was given a copy of a Lent prayer booklet produced by Pray Haringey.
We thought it was a great idea and the following year produced a similar A6 booklet for Croydon Churches Forum (CCF) called ‘46 days of prayer 4 Lent in Croydon.’
It was so well-received that we’ve continued to produce an edition every year since. In recent years we have changed the title to Transform Croydon and added a few extra pages. The booklet gives readers an annual snapshot of the church at work in Croydon, reaching out, in friendship and cooperation, and ministering to those who are in need of an advocate, a kind word or a helping hand. It encourages us to praise God for His creativity and the amazing variety of ways people have responded to His call and are working out the Great Commission.
We have found it to be a really effective tool for united prayer. This year we printed 6,000 copies which were distributed across the borough, linking churches from different denominations with a common purpose. Each day’s entry reported on an ecumenical ministry, or an initiative that reaches out across our borough or an area of church outreach, so it is our hope that all sections of the church were able to find themselves represented in some way.
The entries this year included drop-ins and a night shelter for the homeless, mentoring services for teenagers, a refugee day care centre, English classes, food hubs, a wellbeing café, bereavement services, various chaplaincies, the full range of CAP services, Street and School Pastors, anti-trafficking agency, a gospel festival and many more.
We think the next step will be to go greener and create an app so that the information can be accessed electronically. And maybe through this medium we will be able to engage a younger generation.
So all glory to God and a big thank you, Pray Haringey, for the inspiration!
